Think laterally

lateral-thinking

What ever has happened to lateral thinking?

Consultants have tried to repackage it many ways over the years, from out of the box thinking, to blue sky thinking.
Simply its the ability to let loose your mental restrictions and closed thinking inhibitions.

Lateral thinking is regaining untampered  thought processes again.

Release the hype and the media spin, the pr agents at work or the propaganda we are expected to soak up like passive sponges.

If we are not careful, the ways in which media sources assist and inform our lives, will eventually subversively dictate our lives!

Every mind is capable of independent decision making, taking the hard route over the easy, actually tuning in to instinct and personal selection for a change.

Lateral thinking, is this an art or a science or a given, does everyone use it, just unconsciously, is there a new or alternative term for this today, could lateral thinking be branded? Could someone or something take ownership?
To own lateral thinking, is that a power equal to Derrin Brown.

Throughout history thought ownership and influence has overpowered the weak or the lazy, from wars fought to assassinations carried out, its the controllers that then gain the puppets.

Today we have brain train, we have scrabble we even have Stephen Fry, on a leash letting loose his wisdom on QI, but does any of this expand the mind?

What is the true meaning of lateral thinking, can the ability be lost, if so can it be reignited?...

Four out of five online retailers have digital marketing headaches

Stressed by your inability to track your online marketing spend properly? 79% of the UK's internet retailers are suffering from the same headache, according to new research from Coremetrics

Four out of five online retailers have digital marketing headaches

A significant 79% of online retailers in the UK are suffering from digital marketing headaches, new research commissioned by Coremetrics has found, and a massive 96% of marketers in the retail sector are not measuring ROI across all of their marketing tactics. Furthermore, 25% do not measure ROI across any online marketing tactics at all.

The biggest marketing headaches are deciding where to spend marketing budget, for nearly a third of respondents, and knowing how to determine ROI on elements of their marketing mix, for 29%. The other main problem areas include:

* Comparing campaigns across vendors and channels (32%)
* Information overload about digital marketing initiatives (23%)
* Understanding relationships between campaigns (14%)
* Understanding which campaigns are driving customer acquisition (9%)

Despite this lack of understanding of how to measure integrated marketing techniques, a third of respondents are expecting to add further online tactics to their marketing mix in 2009. In a bid to entice thrifty shoppers, making special offers was the top tactic expected to be implemented in the coming year. However, 'special offers' was the least measured tactic by those who already use it, with 90% not measuring ROI on their efforts.

"Tellingly, all the UK retail companies that have collapsed over the past month have all had a poor web presence, showing that digital is a key weapon in retailers' arsenal," says Coremetrics' Richard Sheppard. "Having a strong and informed web presence, to capture customers that are abandoning the high street, is crucial for retail success in 2009."

When times are tough...

When times are tough and revenues are falling there may be a temptation for business to cut ‘discretionary’ budgets - money allocated to activities such as design, perhaps.

But design is a powerful tool in a downturn.

Our research shows that more than half of the UK’s businesses:

* ... are looking to design their way out of downturn
Over half (54%) of the firms in our survey thought design would contribute to a large or great extent in helping maintain their competitive edge in the current economic climate.

* ... think design is more important now
Similarly, 53% thought that design had become more important in helping the firm to achieve its business objectives over the last three years.

 * ... think design is integral to the economic performance of the UK. The same number agreed or strongly agreed that design is integral to the country’s future economic performance.
